Classes and Lectures

The following is a list of the classes I taught. Please click on the photo to see a larger image. I've also noted in the class description if student examples are displayed.



Embroidery - Four Day Workshops - 12 hours

Embroidered Miniature Quilt

This class will be need to be over several weeks and will cover four different blocks to make the Embroidered Miniature Quilt with blocks featured in my book The Embroidered Miniature Quilt.  The blocks taught will be Grape Wreath, Lavender and Roses, Cornucopia and  Blueberry Wreath.  There will be help given to finish the other five blocks and to make up the quilt.  

Level of skill - some embroidery experience.

Embroidery - One Day Workshops - 6 hours

Beginners guide to unravelling the mysteries of Machine Embroidery

The students will become familiar with many of the methods of machine embroidery.
Level of skill - suitable for all levels.


Blooming Blocks

Embroider with flowers a pre made patchwork block using embroidery thread and ribbons, suitable for a cushion, bag or vest.
Level of skill - suitable for the beginner.


Dyed and Quilted Picture Frame

To make a small coordinated fabric frame to enhance a special photograph using Transfer Dyes, embroidery and quilting.
Level of skill - suitable for all levels.


Embroidered Miniature Basket of Flowers

A trellis stitched basket is filled with many flowers using surface stitchery and ribbon work.  From the Miniature Embroidered Quilt  Collection, this block is 5" and can be used as a centre of a cushion, a wall hanging or the start of a quilt.

Level of skill - some embroidery experience.

 

 


Embroidered Miniature Bowl of Fruit

Embroidered with needlelace, stumpwork, ribbon work and surface stitchery.  From the Miniature Embroidered Quilt Collection, this bowl of fruit  is filled with all the fruit you could wish for. The finished block is 5" and could be used as a centre of a cushion, a picture, or the start of a small quilt.

Level of skill - some embroidery experience.


Embroidered Miniature Grape Wreath

From the Miniature Embroidered Quilt Collection,  this 5" block has French knot grapes and ribbon work leaves. Level of skill - some embroidery experience.


Embroidered Miniature Strawberry Ring

From the Miniature Embroidered Quilt Collection,  this 5" block has needlelace strawberries and ribbon work flowers. Level of skill - some embroidery experience.


French Braiding

This technique uses herringbone stitch on canvas with a number of different coloured pearl 5 cottons. This can be made into a pincushion, needlebook or glasses case.
Level of skill - suitable all levels.


Gold and Glittery Evening Purses

Machine appliqué and embellish fabric for a small purse with machine embroidery in different threads.
Level of skill - suitable for students with accurate machining skills.


Lettering for Embroiderers

By looking at different ways of embroidering or appliquéing lettering for embroiderers by hand or machine.
Level of skill - suitable for beginners.


Playing around with Smocking

By being creative with pre gathered or random gathered fabric very interesting fabric manipulation can be achieved This is very useful to add another dimension to Crazy Patchwork for cushions, bags, soft furnishing, dress decoration and wall hangings. There will be some hand embroidery as well as decorating with machine embroidery.
Level of skill - this workshop is for people who would like to experiment with Smocking.


Two Tassels - Buttonholed Cap, and Key hole

Make two tassels in two different styles to decorate home furnishings.
Level of skill - all levels



Embroidery - Two Day Workshops - 12 hours

All that Glitters is not Gold

First  the silk is dyed for the background of a small picture. This will then be embroidered in  traditional laid metal thread techniques, using some of the different glittery threads and fabrics now available.
Level of skill - some embroidery experience.

Golden Initials

Embroider an initial as a sampler in goldwork using metal threads, ribbons and beads.
Level of skill - some embroidery experience.

Golden Leaves

Crewelwork is combined with goldwork to embroider a small picture using silk and gold threads using traditional techniques.
Level of skill - some embroidery experience.


Knot Gardens

Embroider a formal type garden using traditional canvas work stitches to make a small panel or centrepiece for a cushion.
Level of skill - suitable for those with canvas work experience.


Precious Watercolours

After dyeing a small piece of canvas using flowers and / or leaves as its theme the embroidery is worked with Watercolor™ threads and then outlined with metal thread.
Level of skill - some embroidery experience.


Stumpwork

Using the old techniques of Elizabethan Stumpwork to work a small panel (6"x 8" approx) with a stumpwork figure on a dyed background.
Level of skill - for those with some embroidery knowledge


Victorian Crazy Patchwork Evening Purse

Make a richly embellished small round evening purse in the style of the Victorian technique of Crazy Patchwork using the sewing machine. Beads and sequins are added for extra glitter. The bags are then finished with a zip and rouleau and hand made cords for the strap.
Level of skill - suitable for all levels.


White Gardens

Hand embroider a small picture of a garden of white flowers as in the famous garden at Sissinghurst using a wide range of embroidery stitches.
Level of skill - suitable for all levels.



Patchwork - One Day Workshops - 6 hours

Adding the third dimension to Quilts

This workshop will show how to make three-dimensional pieces using the sewing machine, to add a third dimension to quilts in the form of flowers, leaves and tendrils. These pieces could also be used as decoration for bags or clothing.
Level of skill - the students need to be familiar with their sewing machines.


All the Luck of the Irish

Be ready for St Patricks's Day and make this Irish themed quilt.  By altering the Wheel of Mystery template to make a trefoil this now forms a clover leaf. The Irish theme continues with nine patch blocks arranged into an Irish Chain pattern. Quilt size is 35' x 35" .


Be Cool by the Pool

This mini quilt uses nine Wheel of Mystery blocks to depict a person with a shady hat sitting on a deck  and dipping their toes in a pool while enjoying a cooling drink. This class can be  taught as another option in conjunction with Oh for a Scarlet Hat.

Level of skill - suitable for those who are good at rotary cutting and piecing.


Beginners guide to unravelling the mysteries of Machine Appliqué

In this class the students will learn several methods of Machine Appliqué.
Level of skill - suitable for all levels.


Cornucopia NEW

Learn how to make three dimensional pieces for your quilts with this cornucopia filled woith a wide variety of fruit and vegetables. The background is pieced and machine quilted before the cornucopia and fruit and vegetables are added.


Daisy, Daisy NEW

Using foundation piecing to get really sharp points this 12" x 12" quilt features  two quarter circles of daisies.


Fireworks

A small wall panel of black and starry colourwashed squares is embellished with machine embroidery to depict fireworks. This is a simpler version of my award winning quilt see Gallery.

 Level of skill - suitable for students with accurate machining skills.

Gold and Glittery Evening Purses

Machine appliqué and embellish fabric for a small purse with machine embroidery in different threads.
Level of skill - suitable for students with accurate machining skills.


Kotuku or White Heron NEW

Learn to cut curves with this no template method. This 12" x 12" quilt features a background of curved pieces making a landscape of bush, stream, hills and sky with the moon just rising. A silver Kotuku or White heron glides across this quilt.


Lettering for Patchworkers

By looking at different ways of embroidering or appliquéing lettering for embroiderers by hand or machine.
Level of skill - suitable for beginners.


Liberty Purse

This class shows how to make a small decor purse featuring strip patchwork, piped edges and a rouleau cord.
Level of skill - all levels.


Look who is Hiding NEW

Learn how to make this French Braid pattern small quilt, that features hidden patches, for instance this one has tigers and stars  but the choice is yours. The method used foundation piecing.


My Fair Lady

This Quilt is a smaller version of Sunday in the Pacific featuring three black and white "hats" surrounded by flowers reminiscent of the Ascot Scene in My Fair Lady.

Level of skill.  Suitable for those with good rotary cutting and piecing skills.


Oh for a Scarlet Hat

This  mini wall quilt uses only nine blocks to depict a large red hat, complete with three dimensional flowers, on a purple background, for the lovers of the poem by Jenny Joseph. This class can be  taught as an option in conjunction with  Be Cool by the Pool.

Level of skill - suitable for those who are good at rotary cutting and piecing.


Stars of the New Zealand Bush

This class will make a small wall hanging that features four of the native birds of New Zealand set into stars and surrounded with paper pieced ferns.
Level of skill - suitable for students with accurate machining skills.


Sweet Treats

A small gold thread bon bon dish is made by using hot water dissolvable fabric and gold machine embroidery thread.  We then make look alike thread sweets from fabric and thread to fill the dish.
Level of skill - suitable for students with accurate machining skills.


Tiny Travel Tote

This class shows how to make the ideal small neck purse to contain all a quilter needs when she visits a quilt show and wants her hands free to use her camera and browse the vendor booths! Pockets for passport, notes, change, credit cards, comb, compact and lipstick and even a clip for the car keys. This purse features a small piece of crazy patchwork, zips and piping.
 Level of skill - suitable for students with good dressmaking skills.



Patchwork - Two day workshops - 12 hours

Blooming Blocks

Embroider with flowers a pre made patchwork block using embroidery thread and ribbons, suitable for a cushion, bag or vest.
Level of skill - suitable for the beginner.


Down Under Christmas

In this workshop the students will make a wall hanging or table runner using the Wheel of Mystery templates and grape and strawberry fruit fabrics. Traditional Christmas fabrics will work equally well.
Level of Skill - suitable for those with experience in accurate cutting and piecing.


Japanese Fans

The Wheel of Mystery block is featured in several versions in this wall quilt.  It features a scalloped edged centerpiece and is made of several Japanese type fabrics.  A complimentary coloured tone on tone border is added to finish this quilt.

Level of skill - for those who are good at rotary cutting and piecing.


Proteas and Leucodendrons

Featuring foundation pieced proteas or leucodendrons in this small wall quilt. The students will be shown the method of foundation piecing and will assemble the flowers, make a colourwashed background and add decorative tassels to the centre of the flowers.
Level of skill - students with accurate machining skills.


Victorian Crazy Patchwork Evening Purse

Make a richly embellished small round evening purse in the style of the Victorian technique of Crazy Patchwork using the sewing machine. Beads and sequins are added for extra glitter. The bags are then finished with a zipper and rouleau and hand made cords for the strap.

Waterlilies

The wall hanging made in this class features foundation pieced Waterlilies on a colourwashed background with three-dimensional leaves.
Level of skill - suitable for all levels.

Wheel of Mystery

This quilt is called Wheel of Fortune goes to the Tropics and uses the Wheel of Mystery templates. Tropical prints are used in two different ways. The students can choose to use only one feature fabric for the wall hanging or several very wild and tropical looking fabrics. The blocks will be "fussy cut" and set in either a colourwash of a batik fabric, leaf print or a plain fabric for the background.
Level of skill - suitable for those who are good at rotary cutting and piecing.
